USA, Japan, Australia & India to monitor illegal fishing by China

Tokyo, Japan: The 2022 QUAD summit will take place in Tokyo on May 24. The Financial Times reported on Saturday that Australia, India, Japan and USA will unveil a maritime initiative to curb illegal fishing in the Indo-Pacific.

The report said that the QUAD nations will connect the surveillance centers in Singapore and India, and use satellite technology to create a tracking system for illegal fishing from the Indian Ocean to the South Pacific.

This maritime initiative will help in monitoring illegal fishing even if the boats’ transponders, typically used to track vessels, are switched off.

Kurt Campbell, the US-Indo Pacific coordinator, earlier this month said that USA will soon announce plans to battle illegal fishing in the States as well.

China's vast fishing fleet has also become a worry for non QUAD nations in the Indo-Pacific region. The Chinese violate exclusive economic zones and cause environmental damage and financial losses.
