17th-century female ‘Vampire’ with a sickle across her neck unearthed in Poland
Legends say that the sharp-bladed sickle, a common farming tool, was usually placed to decapitate the alleged 'vampire' in case it came back from the dead (as vampires are wont to do) and tried to sit up. The padlock, on the other hand, signifies the 'impossibility of return'.

Taliban close girls schools in east that had briefly opened
Earlier this month, four girls schools above grade 6 in Gardz, the provincial capital, and one in the Samkani district began operating without formal permission from the Taliban Education Ministry. On Saturday, all five schools were once again closed by the Taliban.

Small nuke reactors emerge as energy option, but risks loom
U.K.-based Rolls-Royce SMR says its small modular reactors, or SMRs, are much cheaper and quicker to get running than standard plants, delivering the kind of energy security that many nations are seeking. France already relies on nuclear power for a majority of its electricity, and Germany kept the option of reactivating two nuclear plants it will shut down at the end of the year as Russia cuts natural gas supplies.
