Diwali will be a public school holiday in New York City starting 2023 with Mayor Eric Adams saying this sends a message about the significance of the city’s inclusiveness and the “long overdue” step will encourage children to learn about the festival of lights. Adams, joined by New York Assembly Member Jenifer Rajkumar and New York City Schools Chancellor David Banks, said on Thursday that in his conversations during the campaign trail, he “learned so much” about Diwali and what the festival of lights means. He said through declaring Diwali a holiday in New York City public schools, “We wanted to send a loud and clear message to the countless number of people who acknowledge this period of time of celebration.

EU leaders seek united front on China dependency
The EU has regarded China since 2019 as a partner, economic competitor and systemic rival. The EU's foreign policy service said in a paper prepared for this week's leaders' summit that Beijing should now be thought of primarily as a competitor that is promoting "an alternative vision of the world order". The push for fine-tuning comes as Germany's ruling coalition considers whether to let Chinese state-owned shipping group Cosco take a stake in a Hamburg port terminal.

Giant fuel fire engulfs Mexico railway and homes
A huge blaze has engulfed a train line and homes in Aguascalientes, central Mexico, after a fuel truck crash. Dramatic video of the fire went viral on social media, including aerial shots of black smoke blanketing a large area of the city. One video showed a cargo train hurtling through flames.State oil firm Pemex has denied owning the truck, and says it is helping efforts to contain the fire. Some 200 firefighters are trying to contain the blaze, El Universal reports. One video shot from a car parked nearby showed a long cargo train passing through flames on both sides of the track.
