US Justice Dept. names war crimes expert as special counsel for Trump probes
Garland named Jack Smith as special counsel, a political independent who had been prosecuting Kosovo war crimes for the International Criminal Court in The Hague.
Garland said Smith will oversee both the investigation into Trump's handling of classified government documents and the probe into attempts to interfere with the peaceful transfer of power after the 2020 election.

Ukraine PM Denys Shmyhal says, almost half energy system disabled
The damage comes as temperatures drop below freezing and the capital Kyiv experiences its first winter snow.
One official in Kyiv warned that the city could face a "complete shutdown" of its power grid.
President Volodymyr Zelensky earlier said that 10 million Ukrainians have been left without power.
And in his video address on Friday night, Mr Zelensky said "the difficult situation with energy supply persists in a total of 17 regions and in the capital", but added that there were "significantly fewer emergency shutdowns" during the day as energy industry workers were racing to restore power.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino accuses West of 'hypocrisy'
In what was supposed to be a 45-minute Q&A with the media in Doha before Sunday's opening game, Infantino delivered a rambling monologue that lasted nearly an hour in which he steadfastly defended Qatar's migrant workers policy and labelled those saying there were 'paid fake fans' in Qatar as racist.
The build-up to the World Cup has been overshadowed by the treatment of LGBTQ+ people and the deaths of migrant workers, but Infantino said critics were in no position "to give moral lessons to people".

She was charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and multiple counts of wire fraud for deceiving investors, patients and advertisers ... all in search of money and fame. She was found not guilty on 4 counts ... the jury couldn't reach a verdict on 3 of the counts.

Iranian protesters set fire to Ayatollah Khomeini's ancestral home
The house in the city of Khomein in the western Markazi province was shown ablaze late Thursday with crowds of jubilant protesters marching past, according to images posted on social media, verified by AFP.
Khomeini is said to have been born at the house in the town of Khomein -- from where his surname derives -- at the turn of the century.

LATAM plane crashes into fire truck on Peru runway
The airline crew aborted the takeoff but couldn't avoid contact with the fire truck. The plane caught fire as it skidded to a stop.
Latam Airlines said all the flight’s 102 passengers and six crew members survived the collision. Peru’s health ministry said 20 people are being treated for injuries.
It was not immediately clear why the fire trucks were on the runway.
The airport will remain closed while the accident is being investigated and the plane and truck are cleared from the runway.
