A large crack, stretching several kilometres, made a sudden appearance recently in south-western Kenya. The tear, which continues to grow, caused part of the Nairobi-Narok highway to collapse and was accompanied by seismic activity in the area.

Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro's trial related to abuse of political power begins
The charges against him emerged from a meeting that Bolsonaro held with foreign diplomats in July 2022. At the time, he allegedly spread false information about Brazil's electoral system. He also reportedly brought its credibility into question. It is a strategy that he used in his reelection campaign.

A rapidly depreciating currency and external deficit led the government to adopt drastic measures over the past year to avoid default.

Facebook and Instagram to restrict news access in Canada
Canada builds on Australia’s New Media Bargaining Code, a world’s first, aimed at making Google and Meta pay for news content on their platforms. Australia, too, had accused the two companies, who dominate online advertising, of draining cash away from traditional news organisations while using their content for free.

‘Shaolin Women’s Soccer’ announced, Stephen Chow searching for talents globally
The original Shaolin Soccer film starred Chow as a Shaolin monk who creates a football team with his brothers to spread the benefits of Shaolin kung fu to the masses. The comedy went on to gross over US$42 million globally. It also nabbed multiple industry awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor at the 21st Hong Kong Film Awards.

Toy giant Hasbro brings back 90s hit Furby
The Furby was first launched by Hasbro in 1998 and 40 million of them were sold globally in the three years following. The toys were known for speaking their own language, ‘Furbish’. The phenomenon sparked a collector craze which drove auction prices above retail prices and was even banned from the National Security Agency (NSA) premises in Maryland.
