Animal that inspired mermaid tales extinct in China
Scientists at ZSL and the Chinese Academy of Science reviewed all historical data on where dugongs had previously been found in China. They found there had been no verified sightings by scientists since 2000. In addition, the researchers turned to citizen science to interview 788 community members living in those coastal regions identified, to determine when local people had last seen one.

India sacks officers for accidentally firing missile into Pakistan
The unarmed BrahMos surface-to-surface supersonic missile was accidentally launched from a secret military base in northern India in early March before the projectile landed roughly 125km (78 miles) inside Pakistani territory without causing any damage to life or property.

Eurotunnel passengers stuck in tunnel for hours after shuttle train breakdown
The breakdown reportedly happened on the 3.50pm Eurotunnel Le Shuttle service which carries vehicles from Calais to Folkestone, a journey that is scheduled to take around 35 minutes. It forced long delays for other passengers waiting to board.

Wimbledon fan to take legal action against Nick Kyrgios
A tennis fan is taking legal action against Nick Kyrgios after he accused her of being "drunk out of her mind" during his defeat in this year's Wimbledon final. Anna Palus said the 27-year-old Australian had defamed her by making "a reckless and entirely baseless allegation".

Qatar deports migrant workers after wage protest
During the protest earlier this month in Doha, at least 60 workers, including some who had reportedly not been paid for seven months, held up traffic outside the Al Bandary company, according to Equidem, a London-based labour rights campaign organisation.

Twitter whistleblower raises security concerns
Peiter Zatko also claimed that Twitter underestimated how many fake and spam accounts are on its platform. Mr Zatko also criticised the way in which Twitter handled sensitive information and claimed that it has failed to accurately report some of these matters to US regulators.
