The Justice Department has said there was no secure space at Mar-a-Lago for such sensitive government secrets, and has opened a criminal investigation focused on their retention there and on what it says were efforts in the last several months to obstruct that probe.

Russia to keep key gas pipeline to EU closed
The news comes amid growing fears that families in the EU will not be able to afford the cost of heating this winter. Energy prices have soared since Russia invaded Ukraine and scarce supplies could push up the cost even further.

Sri Lanka's ousted former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa returns
Rajapaksa fled from the president’s official residence on July 9. Four days after, he fled to the Maldives on a military jet and then to Singapore where he tendered his resignation. Two weeks later, the former Sri Lankan president reached Thailand on a diplomatic visa.

US approves $1.1 Billion Taiwan arms sale, angering China
The proposed deal includes a radar system to track incoming attacks, as well as anti-ship and anti-aircraft missiles. It comes after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last month became the highest-ranking US official to visit Taipei in 25 years.

Iran says it seized US surface drones from Red Sea
Iranian state television aired footage it said came from the deck of the Iranian navy’s Jamaran destroyer, where lifejacket-wearing sailors examined two Saildrone Explorers. They tossed one overboard as another warship could be seen in the distance.

Argentines rally after botched assassination attempt
A man attempted to shoot Fernandez de Kirchner, 69, with a loaded pistol from point-blank range outside her house where many of her supporters were present, but the firearm failed to discharge. Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause for the attack on the former president.
