Elon Musk in row with Zelensky over Russia 'Peace Plan'
Musk sparked the controversy on Twitter by proposing a peace deal involving re-running under UN supervision annexation referendums in Moscow-occupied Ukrainian regions, acknowledging Russian sovereignty over the Crimean peninsula and giving Ukraine a neutral status. Zelensky responded with a Twitter poll of his own, asking: "Which @elonmusk do you like more?" with the options "One who supports Ukraine" and "One who supports Russia." Kyiv's ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk replied bluntly: "My very diplomatic response [to Musk] is to get lost."

Failed missile launch triggers panic in South Korean city
Intended as demonstration to deter North Korea, South Korea said it was conducting a nighttime drill with Hyunmoo-2C short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) when one failed shortly after launch and hit the ground inside the base in Gangneung, a city with a population of around 200,000 on South Korea’s east coast. The missile was carrying a warhead, but it was not armed and did not explode, and there were no casualties, a military official told a briefing. The official apologised for causing residents to worry.

Climate activists ‘baffled’ by Egypt’s move to welcome Coca Cola as COP27 sponsor
Activists have accused the company of “greenwashing” – a communications strategy adopted by companies looking to forge a more environmentally friendly and ecologically responsible image. Over 5,000 people have now signed a petition calling for the sponsorship decision to be reversed. “It is baffling that Coca Cola – the world’s biggest plastic polluter in all global Break Free From Plastic brand audits, including Kenya and Uganda – will sponsor this year’s UNFCCC Conference of Parties in Egypt,” Greenpeace USA Oceans Campaign Director, John Hocevar, said in a statement last week.

Powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake hits Peru-Ecuador border
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake happened at 10:17 GMT 115 kilometres (71 miles) southeast of the town of Palora, in the Morona Santiago province, at a depth of 132 kilometres (82 miles). The quake was felt in the Ecuadorean capital, Quito, and the coastal city of Guayaquil.

Saudi Arabia awarded 2029 Asian Winter Games
The choice for the 2029 Games at the OCA general assembly on Tuesday raised eyebrows in the sports world with the largely desert state of Saudi Arabia experiencing only rare snowfall and without any winter sports infrastructure or tradition. It also means that all or the majority of venues needed for this multi-sports event would have to be built from scratch.

Australia vows new plan to stop mammal extinction crisis
Among the 15 plants and animals listed as threatened are the endangered mildly-venomous grey snake of Queensland, the vulnerable small parma wallaby - threatened by bushfires and predators - and the endangered small, wingless matchstick grasshopper, which is sensitive to drought and frequent bushfires.
