Blast damages Crimea bridge central to Russia war effort
Russia seized Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and the 19-kilometre bridge linking it to Russia’s transport network was opened with great fanfare four years later by President Vladimir Putin himself. It now represents a major supply route for the Russian forces who have taken control of most of southern Ukraine’s Kherson region, and for the naval port of Sevastopol, whose governor told locals: “Keep calm. Don’t panic.”

Iranians keep up the heat on leaders with protests, strikes
The death of 22-year-old Ms Amini, an Iranian Kurd, has ignited nationwide demonstrations, marking the biggest challenge to Iran's clerical leaders in years. The government has described the protests as a plot by Iran's enemies including the United States, accusing armed dissidents - among others - of violence in which at least 20 members of the security forces have been reported killed.

New York City declares emergency over migrant 'crisis'
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has declared a state of emergency to address a "crisis situation" over an influx of migrants. More than 17,000 have arrived in the city from the southern border since April. Republican states like Texas, Arizona and Florida have been sending migrants to Democratic areas in recent months. It's part of a row with the White House as unprecedented numbers of people arrive at the US-Mexico border.

Gray whale numbers along North America's west coast down nearly 40% since 2016
The 38% drop from the population's 2016 high of 27,000 whales to 16,650 this year resembles previous fluctuations but warrants further attention, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Administration (NOAA) report said. Researchers at NOAA's Southwest Fisheries Science Center in San Diego said the latest decline, though not fully explained, likely entails several factors including environmental changes that have shifted the whales' food sources of tiny crustaceans and other invertebrates they prey on in the Arctic.

Haiti asks world for military help to curb chaos
A group of powerful gangs have blocked the country's main fuel terminal since September, crippling its basic supplies like water and food. It is not clear to whom the request for intervention has been sent to, and in what form the help would be given. The UN said it had not received an official request from Haiti's government. "That being said, we remain extremely concerned about the security situation in Haiti, the impact it is having on the Haitian people, on our ability to do our work, especially in the humanitarian sphere," said UN spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.

Musk offers proposal on China-Taiwan tensions, after Russia-Ukraine plan
Billionaire Elon Musk, days after floating a possible deal to end the war between Russia and Ukraine that drew condemnation in Ukraine, suggested that tensions between China and Taiwan could be resolved by handing over some control of Taiwan to Beijing.
