Piet Mondrian artwork displayed upside down for 75 years
At a press conference on the eve of Mondrian. Evolution, a Piet Mondrian exhibition at Germany’s Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen K20 museum, curator Susanne Meyer-Büser announced that the exhibition’s highlight, New York City 1 (1941), has been displayed upside down since it was first seen in public, German publication Monopol reported Thursday.
The first clue that the painting, an adhesive tape version of the similarly named New York (which hangs right-side up in Paris at the Centre Pompidou), was hung incorrectly came from a photograph of the artist’s studio in taken in 1944, shortly after he passed away, the curator said at the press conference. In the photo, New York City 1 can be seen on an easel with the tightly grouped yellow, blue, and black stripes at the top.

Crowds gather in South Africa for Zulu king historic coronation
King Misuzulu ka Zwelithini, 49, will be formally acknowledged as a monarch.
It will be the first Zulu coronation since South Africa became a democracy in 1994.
The event takes place days after the US warned of a risk of a terror attack in the country.
But Police Minister Bheki Cele has said the threats won't impact the ceremony at the Moses Mabhida Stadium where several local and foreign dignitaries are among tens of thousands of people attending.
The event will mark a lot of firsts for South Africa.

Air strikes force Ukraine into longer power cuts
The Ukrainian authorities have warned people in the capital Kyiv to expect longer power cuts, lasting more than four hours, because of Russian attacks on energy infrastructure.
Rolling blackouts are hitting not only Kyiv but also central regions of Ukraine, including the city of Dnipro.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said about four million people were affected but "shelling will not break us".

Iran protesters, security forces clash again in Zahedan
Nationwide protests and strikes, now in their fifth week, started after the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who had been detained for an alleged dress code violation. Protesters in cities across the country have opposed the mandatory wearing of hijabs by women and called for changes to Iran’s political system.
Meanwhile, large crowds were marching across cities in Iran to condemn a mass shooting at a Shiite Muslim shrine in the southern city of Shiraz after Wednesday evening prayers that state media said killed at least 15 worshippers. It is an attack claimed by the Sunni extremist group Islamic State.

Greece is on course to beat its annual record revenue haul from tourism. Portugal also is eyeing a full recovery, while late-summer data suggested Spain, Italy and Cyprus will end the year just shy of pre-pandemic visitor levels.
A blessing for Europe’s southern economies, the rebound is also easing the continent’s tilt toward recession brought on by rocketing energy prices, the war in Ukraine and enduring disruptions caused by the pandemic.
