Finland PM Sanna Marin: Ukraine war shows Europe too reliant on USA
Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin has warned that a Russian victory in Ukraine would empower other aggressors; cautioned that Europe is too reliant on the US for security; and urged democracies against forming "critical dependencies" on authoritarian states like China.
Marin made the comments in a speech at a think tank in Sydney on Friday, at the end of the first-ever visit by a Finnish prime minister to Australia and New Zealand.
She also used the speech to urge democracies to ramp up sanctions against Russia.

Fight breaks out after female MP hit in Senegal parliament
In the midst of the budget presentation, opposition MP Massata Samb struck Amy Ndiaye Gniby of the ruling Benno Bokk Yakaar (BBY) coalition.
Gniby hit back, throwing a chair back in Samb's direction before another lawmaker hauled her to the floor.
The session was eventually suspended as MPs continued to trade blows and launch insults.

Amazon loses 10% of its vegetation in nearly four decades
From 1985 to 2021, the deforested area surged from 490,000 square kilometers (190,000 square miles) to 1,250,000 square kilometers (482,000 square miles), unprecedented destruction in the Amazon, according to the Amazon Network of Georeferenced Socio-Environmental Information, or Raisg.
The numbers are calculated from an annual satellite monitoring since 1985 from Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana and French Guiana. The report is a collaboration between Raisg and MapBiomas, a network of Brazilian nonprofits, universities and technology startups.

US Air Force unveils new B-21 Raider nuclear stealth bomber
The first new bomber in 30 years could cost nearly $700m (£569m) each and can carry nuclear and conventional weapons.
As expected, specific details of the aircraft remain shrouded in secrecy.
But US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said it was "a testament to America's enduring advantages in ingenuity and innovation".

Prince William announces five winners of prestigious Earthshot Prize
The winning projects are based in Australia, Oman, Kenya, the UK and India. The Earthshot Prize award committee, which includes various influential personalities like singer Shakira, actress Cate Blanchett, naturalist and “Planet Earth” narrator Sir David Attenborough, soccer star Dani Alves and NBA Hall of Famer Yao Ming, soccer star Dani Alves finalised the winners.
The second edition of the Earthshot Prize award ceremony saw celebrities from across the globe like David Beckham, Billie Eilish, Ellie Goulding, Annie Lennox and Chloe Halle walking the “green carpet” in Boston, as royal guests of Prince William and Princess Catherine.

Venezuela's biggest refinery halts gasoline production
A refining unit that turns crude oil into fuel at Venezuela's largest crude processing facility has broken down, three people familiar with the operations told Reuters on Friday, halting production at the key gasoline producing plant.
The breakdown of the fluid catalytic cracker (FCC) caused the country's largest refinery, 645,000 barrel per day (bpd) Amuay on the Paraguana peninsula, to halt gasoline production on Thursday, one of the sources said.
