Global economy faces tougher year in 2023, IMF's Georgieva warns
In October, the IMF cut its outlook for global economic growth in 2023, reflecting the continuing drag from the war in Ukraine as well as inflation pressures and the high interest rates engineered by central banks like the U.S. Federal Reserve aimed at bringing those price pressures to heel.

Dubai scraps 30% tax on alcohol sales amid economic rebound
Dubai’s economy has rebounded swiftly from the COVID-19 pandemic, with GDP growing 4.6% on the year for the first nine months of 2022.
Tourism is a key pillar of the economy, and tourist numbers grew more than 180% in the first half of 2022 over the corresponding 2021 period.

Strike over pay paralyses transport in the Tunisian capital
The union, with 1 million members, has approved a two-day strike by air, land and sea transport workers on Jan. 25 and 26, to protest against what it called "the government's marginalization of public companies." 
The strike sparked anger among thousands of people struggling to find transport in the capital.

Lula takes over in Brazil, slams Bolsonaro's anti-democratic threats
Lula, who was behind bars during Bolsonaro’s 2019 inauguration on graft convictions that were later overturned, delivered a veiled threat to his predecessor.
He also accused Bolsonaro’s administration of committing “genocide” by failing to respond properly to the COVID-19 virus that killed more than 680,000 Brazilians.

Syria says Israel strike puts Damascus airport briefly out of service
Last June airstrikes attributed to Israel struck Damascus International Airport, causing significant damage and rendering the main runway unserviceable. The airport opened two weeks later following repairs.
Strikes at the airport were reported in previous years as well.
