'Devastating': EU student numbers in UK drop by half since Brexit
Before Brexit, EU students in England and Wales were paying just over £9,000 (€10,255) in residential fees and could qualify for student finance. Fees have risen to as much as £38,000 (€43,300) after the UK left the bloc.
Concern about new visa regulations due to Brexit is also noticeable, with the number of students from Italy, Germany and France falling particularly sharply.

Japan firm opens whale meat vending machines to push sales
A Japanese whaling operator, after struggling for years to promote its products amid protests from conservationists, has found a new way to cultivate clientele and bolster sales: whale meat vending machines.
The Kujira (Whale) Store, an unmanned outlet that recently opened in the port town of Yokohama near Tokyo, houses three machines for whale sashimi, whale bacon, whale skin and whale steak, as well as canned whale meat. Prices range from 1,000 yen ($7.70) to 3,000 yen ($23).

Sri Lanka leader suspends parliament until policy address
The government did not give a clear reason for the move, but Wickremesinghe's office in a statement said his address to lawmakers on Feb 8 will announce new policies and laws, which will be implemented until the centenary celebrations of Sri Lanka's independence in 2048.
It is also widely expected that Wickremesinghe would announce his policies on sharing power with ethnic minority Tamils. A civil war between the majority Sinhala-controlled Sri Lankan government and ethnic Tamil rebels killed at least 100,000 people, according to UN conservative calculations, before it ended with the rebels’ defeat in 2009.

New Zealanders wade through floodwaters as wild weather continues
Torrential rain and wild weather continued to hit Auckland and the north island of New Zealand on Friday. Cars were submerged and people waded through rising flood water, while first responders came to their rescue.
