"State Of Catastrophe" 670 dead after powerful quake in Turkey, Syria
A 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and Syria early on Monday, killing hundreds of people as they slept, levelling buildings, and sending tremors that were felt as far away as the island of Cyprus and Egypt.
At least 386 people were killed in Syria on Monday as buildings collapsed. AFP correspondents in northern Syria said terrified residents ran out of their homes after the earthquake hit before dawn near the Turkish city of Gaziantep, about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from the Syrian border.

Thousands from around the world gather in Venice for carnival parade
Some hundred decorated rowing boats paraded in Venice on Sunday, led by the legendary 7-metre-long papier-maché ‘Pantegana’, which has become one of the symbols of the Venetian carnival.
Just before the Rialto Bridge, the Pantegana let multicoloured biodegradable balloons hover in the air.

Hydroelectric project by a Rwandan man powers the entire neighborhood
According to statistics provided by the Rwanda Energy Group (REG), the number of households with access to electricity in the country has increased from 10% in 2010 to 75% in 2022.
The total number of connected households across the country is now over two million, but at least 1.4 million families don’t yet have access.

Hong Kong's largest national security trial begins
The 47 defendants, who include prominent activists as well as a legal scholar and former lawmakers, face up to life in prison if convicted.
Sixteen of them have pleaded not guilty to charges of "conspiracy to commit subversion" over involvement in an unofficial primary election organised ahead of legislature polls.
The other 31 have pleaded guilty and will be sentenced after the trial.
