In an impressive display of efficiency, the residents of Villaroya, a small village in the La Rioja province of Spain, accomplished the feat of voting in less than 30 seconds during the recent local elections. With just seven registered voters, the village managed to surpass their previous record of 32 seconds.

Erdogan wins Turkish election, extending rule to third decade
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has won Turkey’s presidential election, extending his rule to a third decade, CNN reported. Erdogan defeated opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu in Sunday’s runoff vote.
With 99.43 percent of the votes counted, preliminary official results announced by Turkey’s Supreme Election Council (YSK) on Sunday showed Erdogan winning with 52.14 per cent of the votes. Kilicdaroglu received 47.86 percent.

Entire village burned down by marauding Darfur militias
A ceasefire between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has led to a lull in the violence around the Sudanese capital, Khartoum. But fighting has continued in Darfur, and as the conflict there enters its seventh week, the region appears to have plunged into chaos.
Those unable to flee the war have been digging ditches around their neighbourhoods and setting up barricades to keep out militia fighters who have been destroying everything in their path.

Venice canal patch turns fluorescent green, police investigation starts
The incident appears to echo recent episodes in Italy in which environmental groups have been targeting monuments with colours and dyes.
Previous incidents include activists using vegetable charcoal to turn the waters of Rome's Trevi fountain black in a protest against fossil fuels.
However, unlike previous cases, no protest group has come forward yet to claim responsibility for what happened in Venice.

Haiti's deadly vigilante movement sees decline in gang violence
The situation in the Caribbean country remains extremely volatile as heavily armed gangs continue to drive a humanitarian crisis that has displaced tens of thousands amid frequent kidnappings for ransom, gang rapes, tortures and murders.
The vigilante movement, known as "Bwa Kale", began after residents of the capital Port-au-Prince lynched and set fire to over a dozen suspected gang members in the early morning of April 24.
